Creating the marketing message involves understanding the target market, taking the time to research, survey and collect sufficent data on the individuals that make up your prospect list. Then, positioning your offer to appeal to the desires of the group. Sounds relatively straight forward, then why do large companies get it horribly wrong? So what are foreign marketing failures? Say your company sells fur coats and you want to market them all over the world. Do you really think they will be a winner in tropical environments? The chances are slim unless you position them correctly. For example, those within the market that travel frequently to cooler climates. How about this, appliances and televisions are a hot item to purchase on the internet. However, if you only manufacture these items with capabilities to use in the United Kingdom and not in the United States, then why would you market the same way in both areas? If your company is utilizing television and radio mediums, then you will need to do extensive research into the area to locate the proper buying habits and the needs of the local consumer. If you do not do the proper research and target the specific needs of the consumer, then you will not receive the benefits in which you are looking to accomplish. These are foreign marketing failures.
Another major foreign marketing failure occures as a result of language barriers. Larger companies have made many humerous mistakes when translating a marketing message internationally. If your company is United States based and you would like to obtain business from China, then obviously you will need to modify your message and business approach to that local language and culture. Obvious right? Well if you want international visitors you need to come back to the basics and make clear international communication your number one priority and start forming a solid international marketing strategy.
